Course: Agronomy and Crop Science

What’s good for grapes may not be good for corn. Agronomy and crop science majors learn what individual crops need to be most productive. They study such topics as soil nutrients, pest management, and weed control.

Some schools focus on local crops, such as field crops in Nebraska or vegetable crops in California. But in either case, you will also learn how to help farmers in developing countries grow crops while conserving precious natural resources. Many agronomists take great satisfaction in knowing that they are helping to feed the world.

Agronomy and crop science majors study the relationships between crops and the soils they depend on.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Take on a special project in an internship, such as updating soil surveys alongside a field soil specialist
  • Attend departmental seminars on subjects such as native grasses and land reclamation
  • Create a nutrient management plan for soils you are studying in the lab; even soils need to eat
  • Focus on a particular group of crops, such as fruit and nut trees or feed for livestock

It Helps To Be...

Interested in world problems and passionate about helping both local and international farmers learn how to grow more food while protecting the environment.

College Checklist

  • How many full-time professors teach agronomy and crop science classes?
  • Does the department offer courses in your area of specialization? Is it influenced by the local agricultural economy?
  • What internships will be available to you?
  • Does the department offer agricultural travel courses and study-abroad programs?
  • Is there a departmental club for agronomy majors?
  • Will the program help you find work after graduation?

Did You Know?

The “green revolution” in many developing countries has made agronomy and crop science an international field. You may study crops grown in countries as different as India and Brazil.

Course Spotlight

In upper-level courses, such as soil fertility management, you’ll practice solving real-world problems like these: Which green manure crops work best in different soils? How does water interact with different nutrients in soil? Classes sometimes include field trips as well as visiting experts. In general, you will be graded on your exam performance and class participation.
