Course: Architectural Technology

If you major in architectural technology you’ll train to become a vital link between architect and construction crew. You’ll rely on your mastery of computer-aided-drafting software to fill in the fine details of an architect’s drawing.

But that’s not all: You’ll also learn how those blueprints become buildings. It takes only one year to earn a certificate or two years to earn an associate’s degree. But by the time you finish, you’ll understand the physical laws that keep a building standing. You’ll also know how to test materials, estimate costs, and evaluate mechanical and electrical systems.

Students of architectural technology learn the skills they need to assist architects and others in the construction field.

Did You Know?

Computer-aided drafting (CAD) may be taking over, but you’ll still learn how to render architectural sketches by hand.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Log time in the computer lab
  • Prepare mock cost estimates
  • Become an expert in materials
  • Submit your plans for critique
  • Interpret blueprints

It Helps To Be...

A computer buff who gawks at buildings. You’ll also need to be precise and accurate: details are everything in this work.

College Checklist

  • Are classroom computers equipped with the latest versions of CAD and other software?
  • Are classes small enough that you’ll get the individual help you deserve?
  • Does the school have an internship or co-op (cooperative work) program that will provide real-life experiences in the field?
  • Will the college help you find work after graduation?

Course Spotlight

You’ll hit the ground running, starting with CAD in your first semester. Computer-aided drafting is a cornerstone of the major and an all-important job skill. After learning to navigate the software, you’ll likely be asked to develop a portfolio of drawings, including floor plans, elevations, and other details of a residential or commercial building.

Be prepared to spend plenty of time in the computer lab, and get ready for your work to be picked apart: your professor will be taking a close look to make sure you’ve got the details down.
