Course: Art Teacher Education
There's a middle school in California covered with murals. One wall beckons with oversized images of playing cards — fantastic queens, knights, and princes. On another, dinosaurs stalk through a prehistoric scene. On a third, kids stroll to class, so realistically painted they blend in with the real-life kids nearby.
Who painted these eye-catching murals? The students. With the skillful guidance of their art teacher, students did it all — created the designs, sketched the outlines, brushed on the paint. If you love the idea of helping kids turn raw creative energy into works of art, consider studying art education.
This major prepares students to teach art and art appreciation programs at various educational levels (mostly kindergarten through twelfth grade).

Someone who loves creating and discussing art, and who enjoys kids. You'll be happiest if you treat lesson planning as an art: a creative process in which you mix your knowledge of art history, methods, and materials with your students' energy, interests, and age level.

- Are the program's art studios well equipped and up-to-date?
- Are class sizes small enough to allow plenty of contact between students and faculty?

Course Spotlight
As part of your studies, you'll observe art classes in local schools. You'll see how teachers tackle such challenges as grading art projects fairly, making classrooms safe, introducing students to art from many traditions, and teaching skills while allowing students to express themselves.
Before you graduate, you'll student teach for a semester -- your chance to put your observations to the test, with guidance from an experienced teacher.
