Course: Building and Property Maintenance

Take a moment to think of all the different mechanical and electrical systems in a big building like a hospital or high-rise apartment. There's heating and air-conditioning, security, telecommunications, and so on. It takes a lot of work to keep these systems functioning properly and safely.

If you choose to major in building and property maintenance, you’ll learn how to take care of all the parts of a building -- be it old or new, large or small, residential or commercial. You’ll also learn skills such as painting, pool care, and lawn care to help keep buildings and their exteriors looking neat and tidy.

Course Spotlight

What exactly is HVAC? It stands for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning, and it’s usually a fundamental course in this major.

In fact, some students choose to specialize in HVAC because keeping buildings from becoming hot and stuffy or icy-cold is so important to human comfort. In an introductory course, you’ll learn about the mechanical refrigeration cycle and its individual parts. You’ll also learn about compressors, evaporators, condensers, and metering devices, and how they all work together in an HVAC system.
