Course: Cellular Biology and Histology

When you look at yourself in the mirror, it’s hard to imagine that you are made up of cells, trillions of them, working together. Though each cell in your body contains your entire genetic code — your DNA — in its nucleus, it is also specialized to carry out specific tasks. Different systems and parts have different types of cells: skin cells, blood cells, muscle cells, and nerve cells, to name a few.

In cellular biology and histology, you’ll study how cells work, both on their own and as part of larger structures, like organs and tissues. You’ll look at the parts within the cell and see how cells combine to form larger structures.

Students of cellular biology and histology study the cell, exploring its inner workings, form, and function.

Did You Know?

Cells perform complicated processes, such as taking in nutrients, getting rid of waste, and interacting with other cells.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Conduct research, independently and with a faculty member
  • Work outside class to complete experiments
  • Work in study groups with other students
  • Balance lectures with lab work

It Helps To Be...

Into math and chemistry. If you like the idea of looking through a microscope to take a closer look at the mysteries of life, you will like this major.

College Checklist

  • Will you be able to focus your major on either cellular biology or biochemistry?
  • How often will you be able to sign up for courses in cellular biology? Are they offered every semester?
  • How many professors teach in the department? How big are classes? Make sure you’ll get the individual attention you need.
  • What kind of access will you have to lab equipment?
  • What kind of opportunities will you have for independent research and internships?

Did You Know?

Students in this major don’t just study cells. You’ll study biochemistry and how whole organisms function too.

Course Spotlight

In cell biology, you’ll study the cell as the basic unit of life. You will learn about the processes that all types of cells perform, but you will also look at specific functions and capabilities of particular types of cells, like blood cells or nerve cells. Much of your work will involve basic chemistry, biology, and physics.
