Course: Cosmetology

All of us have a bad hair day now and then. But if you want to help others avoid that fate, consider majoring in cosmetology. You’ll learn how the right conditioner can tame the wildest of manes, how to transform a blonde into a redhead, and even how to tactfully suggest that the comb-over just isn’t doing the trick.

But mostly, you’ll learn to cut hair -- fine, wispy, fly-away hair; thick, coarse, curly hair; baby hair and older people’s hair. You’ll also learn how to give facials, manicures, and other salon basics, such as handling difficult customers.

Cosmetology students learn how to help people look and feel their best. Course work covers everything from hairstyling to massage to safety and sanitation standards.

Did You Know?

You’ll need to pass a state licensing exam to work in the biz.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Learn salon business skills
  • Study safety and sanitation laws
  • Experiment with hair color
  • Scrub and shampoo scalp after scalp
  • Practice cutting hair of every kind

It Helps To Be...

A creative type who can deal with moody customers: if there’s one thing people are fussy about, it’s their hair.

College Checklist

  • Does the curriculum include your areas of special interest, such as ethnic hair care or makeup techniques?
  • Tour the facilities. Do the labs resemble salons? Are they equipped with the latest technology? Is there a campus salon where you can work with actual clients?
  • Do faculty members stay current by attending beauty shows and workshops?
  • How well have previous grads fared on the state licensing exam?

Did You Know?

The earliest hairdryers were specially adapted vacuum cleaners.

Course Spotlight

Squirt some liquid in a bowl, stir, apply, and -- bingo! Right? Wrong. You’ll need to be equal parts scientist and artist to get a good grade in hair coloring class. You’ll learn not only how to pick the most flattering shades for each client, but how to choose your chemicals with caution.

Coloring hair is tricky business, and you’ll be expected to show what you know, so pay close attention in class. You wouldn’t want to turn your classmate’s hair pea green, after all.
