Course: Engineering Science

On campus, biology is a separate department from chemistry, and physics is separate from computer science. But off campus, projects such as wildlife preservation draw on a combination of sciences.

Engineering science majors design their own programs, building a broad base of knowledge in math and science. Many go on to study subjects such as environmental engineering and nanotechnology, both of which require familiarity with a range of scientific concepts.

Engineering science majors use math and science principles from a wide range of disciplines to solve engineering problems.

Did You Know?

Nanotechnology, a new specialization in engineering science, is engineering at the molecular level.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Complete a senior project analyzing, for example, heart rates
  • Learn how use statistics in a research project
  • Write a detailed design report
  • Study wind flow around an artificial flapping wing
  • Work with fellow classmates to build a voice-activated wheelchair

It Helps To Be...

A flexible thinker who can make connections between concepts from different fields.

College Checklist

  • Does the school offer courses in your areas of interest?
  • Are labs equipped with the latest?
  • Will you have the chance to complete a senior project?
  • Does the department sponsor events related to the major, such as lectures and seminars?
  • Will the program help you find work after graduation?

Did You Know?

Biomedical engineering requires a thorough knowledge of biology as well as engineering.

Course Spotlight

In a class on engineering design, you’ll sample the excitement of engineering. On your own, or with a group, you’ll design and build a working prototype. Past projects have included everything from mine detectors to pancake makers.
