Course: European History
If you’ve gazed at Mona Lisa’s smile, read anything by Shakespeare, or listened to Beethoven and Bach, you’ve already stepped into the vast and wondrous world of European culture. But did you know that Leonardo da Vinci painted his masterpiece at a time when power was slipping away from his land? If you concentrate on European history, you’ll develop a context for understanding many of the world’s great masterpieces.
Students of European history study the continent’s history and culture from its origins to the present day. They also learn how to use historical sources and materials.
Did You Know?
European history is typically offered as an area of concentration within a general history major.
Are You Ready To...?
- Possibly study abroad
- Write a senior thesis (in-depth research paper)
- Learn a foreign language
- Use primary sources in your research
- Read a lot -- every night
It Helps To Be...
Intensely curious about the world around you, and unafraid of reading, research, and writing: you’ll do a lot of all three in this program.
College Checklist
- Does the program offer courses in the areas that interest you, such as Irish history, the French Revolution, or Medieval Europe?
- Does the library own the old European films, photos, and other resources you’ll need for research projects?
- Is there a study abroad program? If so, how many credits earned at a foreign school may be counted toward your degree?
- Will you have the opportunity to take on a senior thesis? If so, what kind of help will you get from faculty members?
- Can you work toward teacher certification while completing your major?
Did You Know?
The first universities in major European cities were established around 1080.
Course Spotlight
Students in this program often take an entire class on one of history’s most chilling events: the Holocaust. In addition to studying dramatic accounts of Nazi Germany’s systematic mass murder of Jews in Europe during World War II, you’ll learn how anti-Semitism developed and how Nazi racial policies began. You’ll also learn how Jews resisted the Holocaust, who tried to help them, and who failed them.
Your grade will probably center on essay exams and papers, so get ready to do some heavy reading and research. But more than that, be prepared for the emotional impact.
