Course: Flight Attendance
If your imagination takes flight at the idea of hopping a plane to Miami one day and Morocco the next, enrolling in flight-attendant school may be just the ticket.
But exciting though the travel may be, being a flight attendant is, first and foremost, about customer service. You’ll need to be “sunny-side up” at all times -- even when passengers get on your last nerve. As a student, you’ll learn all you need to know from greeting passengers to using safety equipment.
Students of flight attendance learn the skills needed to make flights safe, comfortable, and pleasant for passengers.
Did You Know?
You’ll still need to go through four to six weeks of airline training once you’re hired, but majoring in flight attendance could give you an edge in the job market.
Are You Ready To...?
- Identify different aircraft
- Practice first aid
- Learn to use emergency equipment
- Brush up on your communication skills
It Helps To Be...
Good at English: communicating clearly with customers is a flight attendant’s number-one job. A head for other languages is also a plus, as it will help you land those plum international assignments. Worried about looks? Thanks to lawsuits, airlines are less concerned than they used to be, but they still have weight requirements.
College Checklist
- Is there a job placement program? Look at the school’s track record: are most of its grads working for major airlines?
- Does the program keep pace with today’s shifting airline policies, such as tightened security measures?
- Will you get practical, hands-on training through simulated labs and internship programs?
Did You Know?
In the old days, "sky girls" had to be registered nurses.
Course Spotlight
It may sound a bit like charm school, but most flight attendance majors are required to take a class on professional image. Though the days of wearing white gloves and high heels are over, professional polish is still a priority for flight attendants. You’ll learn the art of putting your best foot forward, dressing for success, and acting the part. The skills you gain will not only help you on the job, but will help you land the job -- and that’s sometimes part of the course as well.
