Course: GIS Technology
A major storm is headed your way. Will your neighborhood have to evacuate? Thanks to geographic information systems, emergency response teams get the detailed data they need to make such life-and-death decisions. But GIS data is also used to address the problems of daily life, such as traffic jams.
As a student of GIS technology, you'll practice using specialized software to create maps. You’ll also learn how to interpret data gathered by remote sensors and other tools.
GIS technology majors learn to use software and other tools to gather, assemble, and present detailed geographic data in maps and other forms.
Did You Know?
You can help fight crime as a GIS technician: police use geographic data to map incidents and look for patterns.

Course Spotlight
Computerized mapmaking is a big part of GIS work, so you can expect to take at least one cartography class. You’ll study the principles and uses of maps as well as their history, but the main focus will be on the design and interpretation of maps. Expect to be graded on the complexity of the maps you create and the clarity of your work, as well as the way you organize data.
