Course: Global Studies

Global studies majors are “global thinkers” in every sense. Drawing from fields as different as geography, music, political science, and ecology, they look at the connections between nations and peoples and the trends that shape our lives.

And global studies majors don’t just think on a large scale. They may study how something like climate change can affect hundreds of nations, but they also consider its effects on their own backyard.

Global studies majors compare regions across the globe to shed light on world issues. They study many different fields, including political science, economics, and cultural studies.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Gain a different perspective by, perhaps, living in a very different culture
  • Learn to speak another language well enough to converse in it
  • Read the newspaper daily to follow world events
  • Use e-mail to compare your experiences with a student in another country
  • Lead an in-class discussion on, for example, whether globalization actually means Indianization

It Helps To Be...

Flexible. Sometimes you’ll need to look at the big picture; at other times you’ll need to zoom in for an in-depth study of a particular region or nation.

College Checklist

  • What is the focus of the program? Does it concentrate on politics or culture? Does it offer classes in the social sciences, but also the arts or ecology?
  • How many courses with an international focus does the program offer? What areas of the world are covered?
  • How many of the professors teach in other departments?
  • Will you get to learn a foreign language?
  • Will you have the chance to create a senior project or thesis (long research paper)?
  • Does the program require study-abroad experience? Do study-abroad programs include developing countries?

Did You Know?

Studying abroad in a developing country can be extremely important to your major. It will give you a firsthand perspective on the economic and social issues that many people in other countries face.

Course Spotlight

Globalization, the growing economic and cultural links between countries, is -- naturally enough -- a hot topic in global studies. So it makes sense that some programs offer courses devoted to it.

If you take such a course, don’t be surprised if you spend a lot of time doing research in the field. For example, you might study the impact of globalization on your hometown. You may also interview students in other countries to compare experiences. Such hands-on learning will help you understand the local and the international impacts of globalization, as well as its impact on your life.
