Course: Health Teacher Education

Have you ever wolfed down a doughnut or guzzled a soda for breakfast? Did you know that kids who eat a healthy breakfast get better math grades and reading scores than kids who don’t? And they’re also less likely to be depressed, anxious, and hyperactive.

Health teachers help young people develop healthy habits. But they don't just bombard students with boring lectures on dos and don'ts. Instead, they give kids the information and support they need to make their own choices about issues ranging from asthma to drug use to safe sex.

This major prepares students to teach health education programs in elementary, middle, or high schools.

Did You Know?

Some programs prepare you to teach a particular grade level, while others prepare you to teach kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Take lots of science and math
  • Do hands-on learning at local schools
  • Participate actively in classroom discussions
  • Volunteer at a hospital or as a peer health counselor at your school's health service

It Helps To Be...

Tolerant and good at motivating people. If you speak sternly to kids who are tempted by unhealthy habits or already have them, they'll probably turn a deaf ear. If you actively engage them in learning about health, you'll be much more likely to hook them.

College Checklist

  • Is the program approved by the state's department of education?
  • Will you be required to pass certain exams (such as Praxis) in order to be certified?
  • What grade levels will the program prepare you to teach?
  • Do faculty participate actively in the profession by publishing articles or serving as members of public health associations?
  • What percentage of graduates find jobs as health educators?

Did You Know?

Some students double major in health education and another subject, such as physical education, to increase their career options.

Course Spotlight

Before you graduate, you'll spend a semester student teaching. With guidance from an experienced teacher, you'll practice designing and teaching classes.

Maybe you'll lead a kindergarten discussion about medicine -- what it is and who should give it. Perhaps you'll help ninth-graders research body image and create a media campaign to educate their schoolmates. You'll value this chance to test the unique combination of people skills and science know-how required to teach young people about health.
