Course: High School Teaching
Think about the best teacher you've ever had. What stands out? A great sense of humor? The ability to guide you through a tough math lesson or stay calm in the midst of chaos? An attitude of concern for each and every student? Many high school educators went into teaching because of a teacher they loved. Do you have such a teacher, one who inspires you to walk in his or her footsteps?
If you choose this major, your studies will cover everything from classroom management to teaching methods to specific subjects, such as history. You’ll also learn how to meet the needs of students who learn in different ways.
This major prepares students to teach high school (also called secondary school). High school usually includes grades nine through twelve.
Are You Ready To...?
- Spend time in schools observing and student teaching
- Learn a foreign language to get more job offers and prepare for today's diverse classrooms
- Design lesson plans and practice teaching them in front of your peers
- Study one or two academic subjects in depth
It Helps To Be...
Well organized, patient, and great at writing, speaking, and listening. Good high school teachers are also idealists who love to help others.
College Checklist
- Is the program approved by the state's department of education?
- What special requirements (such as foreign language training) must you fulfill in order to receive a teaching certificate?
- What percentage of graduates pass the state licensing test?
- What percentage get teaching jobs right after they graduate?
Did You Know?
Teachers have more vacation time than do people in most other careers.
Course Spotlight
Just as important as your academic studies are field placements -- visits to high schools where you can watch teachers in action. You'll get the inside scoop on tough questions: How do I prepare my students to succeed on standardized tests and still make time to teach other material? How do I teach students with special needs, such as physical or emotional disabilities? How do I organize my classroom?
Shortly before you graduate, you'll spend a semester student teaching under the supervision of an experienced teacher. You'll treasure this chance to practice all you've learned before stepping into your own classroom.
