Course: Musical Theater
Are you ready to set the world on fire with your big voice, awesome acting skills, and smooth dance moves? Then majoring in musical theater may be the ticket for you.
But just as Broadway isn’t for the faint of heart, neither is this demanding, performance-oriented program. You'll not only take a rigorous schedule of acting, singing, and dancing classes. You'll also spend countless nights and weekends rehearsing for, and performing in, student productions. This is a major for the brave and the committed only.
Musical theater majors undergo intensive training in acting, singing, and dancing in preparation for professional theater careers.
Did You Know?
You’ll probably have to audition for your spot in the musical theater major -- and the competition can be stiff.
Are You Ready To...?
- Pass periodic reviews by a “jury”
- Devote evenings and weekends to rehearsals
- Take the heat from competitive classmates
- Audition for school productions
- Spend long hours perfecting songs, dance moves, and monologues
- Learn how to move on the stage
It Helps To Be...
A “triple threat” with talent in all three disciplines -- acting, singing, and dancing. A willingness to work hard is essential: this major can be all-consuming.
College Checklist
- Is the program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music or the National Association of Schools of Theatre?
- When do students audition for the major -- as high school seniors or college underclassmen?
- Have the professors worked professionally in musical theater?
- How many shows does the department present each year? Will you have plenty of opportunity to get experience onstage?
- Tour the facilities. Is the campus theater up to professional standards? Will you have easy access to music rooms and studio space for rehearsing?
- Is the program equally balanced between the three disciplines? Some schools emphasize acting and singing over dance, for example.
- Does the school offer opportunities for study in the theater centers of the world, such as New York and London?
- How does the department help prepare students for the dog-eat-dog world of professional theater?
Course Spotlight
Get ready to sing as you’ve never sung before: Most musical theater majors are required to study voice every single semester. In this class, you’ll learn how to take care of your voice through proper breathing techniques and warm-up exercises. You'll also practice singing with expression and confidence.
You'll be quizzed, so take good notes on those anatomical and musical terms. But the big focus here is on performance -- the sooner you get used to being judged by your classmates and teachers, the better.
