Course: Plastics Engineering Technology

Telephones and Tupperware, dashboards and keyboards, baby dolls and baby bottles. It’s a plastic world. Making it all possible are the plastic professionals, testing materials, designing molds and products, and running and repairing the assembly line. As a student of plastics engineering technology, you’ll learn the science behind all of these activities.

Students of plastics engineering technology learn how to help engineers and others, applying basic engineering principles to the manufacture of plastic products.

Did You Know?

Once you graduate, you’ll qualify for a wide range of entry-level technician positions in such areas as equipment set-up, quality control, processing, and materials testing.

Are You Ready To...?

  • Memorize safety rules
  • Design and construct molds
  • Practice preparing plastics for processing
  • Test different kinds of plastic in the lab
  • Study the chemical makeup of plastics

It Helps To Be...

Good with machines and strong in math and science: this is technical stuff.

College Checklist

  • Does the program emphasize a certain aspect of plastics, such as manufacturing or design?
  • Are the labs equipped with state-of-the-art equipment?
  • Is there an internship program?
  • Will the school help you find work after graduation?

Course Spotlight

Plastic is plastic is plastic -- right? Wrong. In plastic materials processing, a lecture/lab course you’ll likely take early in the program, you’ll learn just how many kinds of plastics there are. You’ll also learn how those plastics are processed, from compression to injection, molding, and fabrication. You’ll go beyond memorizing facts, acting on your knowledge to solve real-world challenges, such as designing an injection-molding die for a simple product.
