Course: Printing Technology

For every newspaper, book, or other printed product, there is a production crew laboring behind the scenes, from printing press operators to bindery workers. As a printing technology major, you’ll learn the skills necessary to plan, prepare, and complete print jobs, from assembling film to operating printing equipment to cutting and collating the finished product.

Most programs offer both old-school and new-school techniques, so by the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared for hands-on production work as well as cutting-edge desktop publishing.

Printing technology majors learn the wide range of technical skills needed to run printing and graphic communications jobs, from start to finish.

Course Spotlight

You’ll get your feet wet -- and your hands dirty -- in offset press operations class. In this hands-on introduction to the world of offset-press equipment, you’ll produce plates, set up the printing unit, and print and assemble jobs. And if you thought your days of writing papers would end with high school, think again. You’ll probably have to turn in a step-by-step report for every project you do. 

Though much of your learning will happen in the print shop, you’ll also listen to lectures. So get ready to take notes while your prof passes on the facts about press operations, including industry jargon.
